Those were taken during a boat city tour yesterday.

Our team is on a one-day trip to Damark today.  They left in the morning and will be back in evening.  It  takes about two hours ferry from Gothenberg to Damark.  So, not too far away.

I did not go because I had sea-motion sickness before.  I do not want to take the chance.

So I have time to process a bit more photos and post the photos and the blog.

We will be on the way back home tomorrow.  See you guys soon.

Cumulative Match Blog: Italy, Sweden

Murky clouds roll over the sky, blanketing the sun with shaows. Puddles on the sidewalk reveal tell-tale signs of previous rain. --Gothenberg, Sweden
Brilliant blue fills the sky, allowing the sun's rays to penetrate into the air. Sweat drips like faucets from those merely walking on the streets. --Rimini, Italy

Apparently, the vastly contrasting weathers of Sweden and Italy also applies to our ability to play soccer.

In Italy, letting in fifteen goals, scoring none, and losing four straight games was nothing less than a major disappointment, not only because of the humiliating defeats suffered by the players and coaches, but also because of the blow to the team's self-esteem and mental/emotional stability. The seemingly endless heat had lead us to seemingly endless defeats.
By the time the sky had been blanketed by the shadows of the sun, our losing streak had ended. The first game in Seattle-like weather gave way to our first win in Europe, an exceptionally satisfying sigh of relief as our team got back on track. We later played tough losing games against Brazil and Germany that could have gone either way, being only 2-0 and 1-0 respectively.

In our first playoff game in the B bracket, we won our first game against Brazil in PKs of a 2-2 game. Angel's last shot in the second half allowed for the strongest comeback Velocity has ever witnessed. The Malaysians in the second match proved to have superior ball control and shot opportunities, and although our defense was strong, it was apparent that the Malaysians played the better game. We were somewhat lucky that the halves were only 25 minutes, allowing us to win in PKs. The third game against another Brazilian team was rough; the referees barely called any of the fouls, and when they started to attempt to control the game, the Brazilians were up 3-0. Although we lost that round, it was the best Gothia Cup run that Currin had ever had.

All while under the familiarity of Seattle weather.

The amazing run of three play-off games (and also the not-so-amazing run of four straight losses) has allowed our team to grow in ways not possible in the states. I can imagine (oh so easily) going back to our regular select soccer league, playing Washington teams, and stepping on them like the first Swedish team we played. Reflecting on the soccer matches and team activities, I can see how our team has grown mentally, physically, and emotionally.

Day 7-9 Updates

Local time 12:10 am –

I apologize for the infrequent and sporadic updates.  Late nights and changing countries makes for busy nights and mornings.

Sat. 7/14

Up early for 3.5 hr bus ride to Venice.  Spent the entire day in the amazing city before leaving around 7 pm.  Went on a 2 hour walking guided tour, everyone rode in a gondola around the canals and had time to shop, soak up the atmosphere and take lots of pictures.

Sun. 7/15

Boys decided they wanted to get up early for a visit to the Ferrari Museum in Maranello.  Checked out of hotel by 9:30 am and hit the road again.  Rough day for Thor who we think must have had some shellfish mixed in with his pasta dinner on the last night.  He spent the night, without telling me :( throwing up as a result of an allergic reaction.  We took good care of him Sunday.  Poor guy vomited all day including both flights to Sweden.  Happy to report the situation has passed and he was 100% back to normal today.

Arrived at school in Sweden about 12:30 am earlier today after our bus got lost picking us up at the airport.  Lost Thor and Ian's bags, but KLM delivered today.  To bed by 2:00 am after checking in at the school.   This was after a fair bit a drama in the classroom.  Boys freaked out about some silverfish spotted in the corners of the room and on their sleeping pad/bedding.  After we calmed the nerves we all settled in for some indoor camping...complete with sleeping on the floor and with bugs :).

Up early today for a 10:00 am match, which we arrived 5 min. before the start of the match.  Commute time a bit longer than expected...tram and walk.  No one stressed out ;).  However, the soccer Gods were back in our camp.  They boys went out and dominated the Swedish team scoring 2 goals in the second half.  Oh what a relief....happy Velocity back again.

Goal #1 - Chris from Nick's free kick, headed on goal by Evan and cleaned up by Chris

Goal #2 - Eduardo with a laser left into the right side netting assisted by Michael

This afternoon we unpacked, got new/fresh bedding and the Gothia staff sprayed the room while we were at the match.  All is good now....except for Traci's accommodations.  They didn't have a separate room for her...so she is having the pleasure of rooming with 16 guys.  She is being a good sport and managing through it while I try to get her a separate room.  Lunch at the school this afternoon was surprisingly good (Chicken curry over rice).  Full stomachs we came back after lunch and I tricked the boys into 30 minutes of quiet time in the room with the shades pulled.  Voila 2 hours later everyone well rested and down time away from each other much needed.

Opening ceremony tonight at the main profession stadium packed to the max.  Parade of countries and live entertainment capped with fireworks.  A ceremony 100x better than the San Marino Cup...so said the boys.  Quite a spectacle.  Boys showing the US pride tonight (finally) coming up with chants and leading other US teams on the tram to the event.  US flags draped over their backs they marched through the streets of Gothenburg showing their colors proudly.

Time for sleeping pad...now 12:30 am local.  Boys in bed an hour ago.  Up at 6 am and off to the match versus Brazil at 9:00 am.  Make sure to follow our progress at http://results.gothiacup.se/2012/division/826560.

Cheers!

Day 6 Updates

Local Time 10:15 pm –

The last few days have been pretty awesome. Although we are unfortunately out of the San Marino Cup, there are still plenty of fun activities in San Marino. On Wednesday night, we went go-karting, which was followed by a  day at the water park. Both excursions were a lot of fun, and we even had some time to relax afterwards.

On another note, it has been very interesting to see the cultural monuments that Italy has to offer. So far, we have visited four Catholic churches: One in Rimini, and three in Ravenna. The paintings and architecture are a sight to behold. Of course, the culture of Italy is also all around us, in the people, food, and everyday interactions. That is also quite a sight to behold. Overall, we are having a lot of fun, and I am looking forward to the days that lie ahead!

Italy is awesome! Love the energy here when the town lights up at night. Even though we were eliminated from the tournament the trip has been very fun. Seeing all the churches was great… so much history in Italy. The other activities such as go-karting(which I did take first place in both races) , going to the water park and hitting the beach have all been to great success and fun! I feel bad for all you parents missing out on this delicious food.  Looking forward to swedish pancakes and the Gothia cup. Let’s do it velocity!

Italy has been a pretty up and down journey so far.  Our injuries and slightly poor performances in games were unfortunate, but the group is still having a lot of fun.  Today we made our trip to the water park, which I really enjoyed.  It was less crowded than the water parks back home, and I think we all had a good time.  One thing that I am noticing is that the Italians are not shy at all to show their love or affection of one another.  They are fine with kissing in public, which is not weird but is still a lot different than what I’m used to. Also, at least between the players, it seems that everyone is getting along.  Players that usually only hang out with a few other people are happy to talk with anyone else on the team, and I feel that there is a good sense of inclusion.  I am looking forward to Venice as well as the good times ahead.  I wish that all of you could be here!

The soccer teams we faced in Italy were extremely tough – and unfortunately, we were unable to win a single game. Because of this, our trip hasn’t gone quite the way I had hoped in the soccer department, but hopefully we can boost that up when we head to Sweden! The group activities and the overall atmosphere throughout the team is still very good. You can talk to anyone on the team, even the people you don’t normally talk to, and still have a great time. We learn more about each other as each day passes, and it is really a pleasure to be here with such a great group of guys.

Unfortunately, in the game against Romania, I experienced a very tough kick right to the calf in my right leg. Both the coaches and myself thought that it would be a bruise that would heal up pretty fast. The pain persisted, and with each day it seemed to get worse. That left today to be an E.R. run – not exactly the first thing I would have expected on the agenda today. All the other people on the team went to the water park while I anxiously awaited for my turn to enter the swinging doors in the waiting room with everyone around me speaking Italian. I was quite honestly scared and confused. After an hour and a half of waiting, I was seen by a doctor. He knew his medical content(but not his English). Thanks to the help of Sylvia, our translator, we were able to depict his explanation of my injury. It will take around two weeks to heal – which means no more soccer for me. Although I am extremely bummed about this, I’m excited to sightsee in Venice and explore Sweden when we get there. Kick some butt in the next tournament for me, Velocity!

This trip really has been an adventure for all of us, from the equivalent of about 25 hours of traveling to sightseeing to playing teams, its been an unforgettable experience, and we’re only halfway done! Although our play on the field wasn’t the best and I know Velocity can play much better, we’ve been able to experience new culture, new foods, new languages, and hotter weather for sure! Everyday we’ve been able to eat breakfast at the hotel, which includes hot chocolate and croissants for me, for lunch its either pizza or pasta with a dessert of gelato, and then dinner back at the hotel. We’ve also been able to sightsee in old Rimini and Ravenna and see churches and buildings 10 or 11 centuries old. My favorite part is the amount of jerseys they have at the street vendors, I’ve been able to find countless jerseys which I’ve had to restrain myself from buying. Overall, I’m looking forward to seeing Venice and showing Sweden how Velocity plays and win the whole tournament!

Day 4-6 Update

Local time 1:00 am –

Blogger coach Curr is back after a few days rest.  I was serious when I mentioned I was way behind on sleep J.  I haven’t been the most pleasant to be around as of late for many reasons, but some good one v one talks with players today, a good group chat after dinner and some downtime (thanks Traci/Vickie) away from the gazillions of daily questions and decisions…I am feeling a bit better today.  Even had a little fun finally with the boys tonight playing night beach volleyball.

As some of you may have already heard, the boys had a bad run at this tournament unable to win a game or score a single goal.  We definitely weren’t up to our usual ‘A’ game standards at times and also played against some very large and talented opponents at times.

Wednesday a.m. game versus Romania a rough one for many reasons.  Romania tied Brazil the day prior and I am certain the coach lit a fire under their cleats as they shelled us 6-0 the next day, not letting up even when they were awarded a PK at 5-0, which their keeper took and scored.  Traci had something to say to their coach about that.  Angel P. issued a red card (1 game suspension) as did a Romania player for pushing each other after Quinn (keeper) was fouled.  Will C. suffered an blow to his right calf during the match as a strong Romanian striker attempted to shoot the ball but got Will instead.  Took Will to the doctor today as his calf pain and swelling wasn’t improving   Turned out he suffered more than a deep bruise, but a strain in the calf muscle that will unfortunately put him out for the rest of the tournament.  He and the rest of the team are really bummed.  Here I thought I was going to break the string of hospital emergency room visits with this team…count it as visit #4.

Wednesday p.m. game all too important against the 4th place Jordan team who had just 3 points versus our 0 points.  A win against them would advance us to the next round.  The 5 pm sun and heat after a morning game was brutal…and with only 13 players (Will injured, Angel red card).  The boys battled valiantly with everything they had, but just couldn’t find the back of the net after 15+ shots.  The opponent was able to score 3 off of 10 shots (1 PK).  Mental and physical fatigue took its toll as form and decision making was a challenge.  Some of the boys were really bummed and others seemed quick to move on shortly after on the bus ride home as they discussed what fun activity they were planning to do once they got back to the hotel…which surprised me based on my past teams who lost games that knocked them out of the tournament.  Surprised and it actually really bothered me and Traci too…I finally shared these thoughts with the boys at tonight’s post-dinner chat where passion and grit were a main topic and reiterated the soccer is the main reason we are here.  This is foreign territory for me to have team not win a game nor score a goal in Europe.  We are all ready to take away some key soccer learning’s from Italy and leave a lot of bad soccer mojo behind as well…regroup and start Sweden with a fresh/positive outlook.

I’ll let you read the player posts shortly for updates on the off field activities.  Venice all day tomorrow…enjoy the pictures from Rimini and Ravenna with more great shots to come from Mr. Ling in Venice.

Time for bed…up early in the a.m. to collect the boy’s uniforms from the self-service laundry.  Didn’t realize it closed at midnight tonight….doh!  Don’t tell Traci shhh!  J

We visited an ancient city called Ravenna, about one hour train from our hotel. Our boys had a lot of funs, and hopefully they also learned a bit of great Italy history. I am sending you a compressed file, which saves a lot of my time . You can double-click on it and then open it. All photos will be down-loaded to your local harddisk. Day 4 Update - Eduardo

Local time 2:20pm.

Hey parents we’ve all been experiencing new things and eating really good Italian food. All the food so far has been great especially the gelatos. We went on a tour to some old city called Rimini and there was a 15th century church, castle , and bridge. The weather is probably twice as hot here than in Bellevue so the games are a lot harder and the teams are a lot better but its good because we’re learning new styles of soccer.

Ciao!

Day 3 Update

Ciao...

Local time 11:30 pm. Another busy day for all. Match this am was against Italy (not Romania) as blogged last night.

The unfortunate result 4-0. Game much closer than the 2-0 loss yesterday regardless of final score. Similar ball possession as and shot count as Italians. We looked more like the US Velocity of old today. Inches from having our first goal from Eduardo who hit the inside of post and traveled across goal mouth.

Velocity fought hard til the very end. Italian team is a team formed of the best local players for the tournament.

Must win against Jordan and hope to sneak a point (tie) versus Romania to make it to round 1 playoffs.

Rest of day today spent swimming, buying 72 1-liter bottles of water, visiting old town Rimini (church, castle and bridge from the 15th Century) and some shopping (Foot Locker :)). Team dinner in Rimini outside with pizza, pasta and lasagna the top choices.

Back by 10p...many of the boys in bed and asleep before 10:30 curfew. A few started making calls home tonight with calling card. More tomorrow. Hope to get the boys to start blogging tomorrow.

2 matches tomorrow with a rest and some laundry in between. Tournament disco night tomorrow at 9:30p.

The team remains very positive and having a great time.

Coach Curr still needs more than 6 hrs sleep...good night!

Ciao!
